Gary McGaughey: From Private Equity to CFO of Williams Lea

McGaughey has spent the past 20 years working in the private equity sector. McGaughey was previously the CFO of Williams Lea; a leading private equity firm focused on leveraged buyouts across a wide range of industries. During his time at Williams Lea, McGaughey worked to expand the organization’s footprint across the U.S. and into key international markets. Working closely with the firm’s operating teams, McGaghey also played a vital role in the firm’s strategic planning process. McGaghey is currently a senior associate at the accounting firm Crowe LLP, based in Boston. A former accounting professor, McGaughey, will be pursuing a Ph.D. in accounting.

What is your professional background?

McGaughey began his career as a student at Boston University, earning an undergraduate degree in accounting in 1989 and a master’s degree in accounting from Arizona State University in 1991. He then worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as a senior associate before joining Williams LeA in 2007.

What motivated McGagney to switch to CFO?

McGaghey’s initial interest in accounting began at a young age. He was fascinated by how the field impacted his family members, and he decided to pursue an accounting degree as a career. McGaughey has focused on corporate finance throughout his career, working with private equity firms and providing financial advisory services. As he grew through the ranks at Williams Lea, he found that business operations were different than what he had initially anticipated. So, when it came time for McGaughey to make the switch to CFO, he was excited about the opportunity for new challenges and opportunities.

McGagney accomplishments as CFO?

In 2008, McGaghey helped Williams LeA complete a $450 million leveraged buyout transaction. That same year, he negotiated the firm’s acquisition of a $2 billion private equity portfolio from New York-based Magna Global. In 2013, McGaughey led the firm through an IPO on the NYSE. Mr. Gary McGaghey is a CFO who was previously with Williams Lea and then started his own company at Crowe LLP in Boston. He has been working in the private equity industry for 20 years and has worked with public and private companies across different sectors. As CFO of Williams Lea, Gary oversaw its successful completion of numerous acquisitions and public offerings on the New York Stock Exchange and contributed to its strategic planning process.

The field of finance is constantly evolving through technology. With the advent of electronic trading, the field has become much more complicated.
