Vijay Eswaran: Business Innovator and Motivational Speaker

Vijay Eswaran is an international business leader, motivational speaker and author. He has been a company director of HSBC since 2008, where he was the chairman from 2009 to 2014. In addition to his contributions to the banking industry, Vijay has authored numerous books on leadership and success in business. His most recent book ‘The 4 Disciplines of Execution’ is about how you can make your strategy a reality by developing a plan with specific goals for execution, holding people accountable for meeting those goals and rewarding them based on performance. In this exclusive interview with Desk Baba, Vijay Eswaran talks about what he has learnt from being a company director and introduces his latest leadership philosophy.

During his time as the chairman of HSBC, Vijay Eswaran made various contributions to improve internal operations. He introduced new leadership programs that are still being used today. As a result, executive management has become more aligned with HSBC’s strategic objectives for 2020. This past year, the organization also decided to appoint its own chief executive officer by taking away the power of nomination from the board. This is one of the many changes that Eswaran has implemented in order to increase HSBC’s competitiveness.

To help the country recover from the 1997 Asian financial crisis, Vijay joined hands with several other entrepreneurs to create jobs and promote economic development by founding QI Group of Companies which includes luxury hotels, resorts and spas; an e-commerce company; and a media and publishing group.

However, Vijay Eswaran has stepped down from his position as Chairman and will no longer serve on HSBC’s Board of Directors. He is currently working on a new leadership philosophy that he will share with Desk Baba in April. His career success has inspired many people to follow in his footsteps. He recently received the ‘International Leadership Award’ at The Asian Awards 2017.
